# How Many Hours Is Too Many? Reading a Used Chipper's Wear Story

> Why hour meters mislead on chippers, the wear parts that actually decide value, and real repair costs from documented cases.

Tree crews run chippers hard, fix them fast, and sell them painted. That combination makes the used chipper market one of the most information-poor equipment markets we track, and it is why the hour meter is the least reliable number on the listing.

## The fresh-paint warning

From long-running arborist forum testimony in our records: units with 5,000+ hours still run daily, while the classic trap is the freshly painted machine whose meter reads suspiciously low. Paint is cheaper than bearings. Read the wear story instead: the drum or disc, the anvil, the feed system.

## The wear parts that decide value

- Knives and anvil: a knife edge lasts roughly 25 working hours before resharpening; anvil sets run around $400 on mid-size Vermeers. Consumables, but their condition tells you how the machine was run.

- Drum and feed bearings: the flagship failure. Our [Bandit 250XP](/models/bandit-250xp/) record documents feed-roller-bearing weak points; the [280XP](/models/bandit-280xp/) record carries an on-camera OEM price: hydraulic drive motor, $993.44.

- Autofeed electronics: the documented [BC1000XL](/models/vermeer-bc1000xl/) case in our record: magnetic pickup sensor failure root-caused after an $850 control board plus a $350 service call, a $1,200 repair event for what looked like a feed problem. The same record documents a bypass-wiring red flag found during a used-unit inspection: if the safety interlocks are jumpered, walk.

## What the market actually pays

Observed ranges from live listings on our records: BC1000XL $19,900–$32,900 · [BC700XL](/models/vermeer-bc700xl/) $6,900–$15,900 · 250XP up to $46,000 for late units · [255XP](/models/bandit-255xp/) around $48,800 for a 2021 machine · [Altec DC1317](/models/altec-dc1317/) $1,050–$16,000 across a wide condition spread. Wide bands are the point: condition, not calendar, sets the price.

## Inspection, in order

- Interlocks and safety systems un-bypassed and functional, non-negotiable.

- Drum/disc condition, knife and anvil wear, bearing play by hand.

- Feed system under load, both directions; autofeed behavior.

- Hydraulics: hoses, pump noise, cylinder seep.

- Price against the model record's observed band; treat fresh paint as a question.
